The governor of the Bank of England has unveiled the new £20 polymer banknote featuring the artist JMW Turner.

Mark Carney revealed the note’s design in Margate at Turner Contemporary gallery, which is named after the painter.

The £20 note – made from polymer like the new £10 and £5 notes – contains “sophisticated security features” which make it the “most secure Bank of England banknote yet”.

Of 228,000 counterfeit banknotes found by the Bank of England in the first six months of the year, nearly 90% were £20 notes. In order to combat this, the bank said that the new note would incorporate two windows and a metallic hologram, making it “very difficult to counterfeit.”

The new note will be issued for the first time on 20 February 2020.
